Henriette Ronner-Knip (1821-1909), 'A dog car, loaded with vegetables' - Henriette Ronner-Knip (1821-1909), 'A dog car, loaded with vegetables' signed ‘H. Knip’ lower left. In the 1950s Henriette Ronner Knip broke new ground in animal portraiture. She shifted her attention from the pure bred dog to the farm dog and load carrying dog, inspired by forerunners in Belgian realistic animal painting such as Joseph Stevens (1819-1892), who in turn was inspired by the realism and the rough, brush-like style of Courbet. Ronner Knip appropriated a new painting style by painting in browns and ochres and seeking contrast in tonal differences executed in a more robust painting technique than the carefully painted and composed works from the 1940s.
