RKD: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/3843214. The execution of Count Lamoraal van Egmont took place on 5 June 1568 in Brussels' Grand Place, by order of the Duke of Alva. Together with the Count of Horne, he was beheaded for alleged high treason and rebellion and in retaliation for the Spanish defeat at the Battle of Heiligerlee. This execution was a crucial moment in the run-up to the Eighty Years' War: the death of Catholic nobleman Egmont shocked the Netherlands and contributed to the revolt against Spanish rule.
