Trip' bottom right. The supertanker pictured here has Esso's distinctive black chimney with white band. Supertankers like this one were built by Esso and other oil companies at the time of the oil crisis because ships then had to sail around the cape. Many were built, including the Esso Cambria, Esso Nederland, Esso Europoort, Esso Lybia, Esso Den Haag et cetera. Judging by the three distinctive 'poles' on deck and the superstructure on the aft deck, the ship most resembles the Esso Nederland. However, the windows in that superstructure on the aft deck differ, making it plausible that Victor Trip did not want to depict a specific ship but, in general, an Esso supertanker. The artist was well acquainted with Esso's oil tankers: in 1965, he illustrated the booklet 'Oil builds sea: The development of the Esso tanker fleet', published on Esso's initiative.
