"When the Dead Wake Up (Dear Grave)" (1926), artist
K.A. Vyalov, director A. Dmiriev, starring Igor Ilyinsky.
According to the plot of the film, a young man returns to a small city, under the guise of a funeral, under the guise of which a local priest and estate manager buried a treasure with county treasures. Upon learning of this, he decides to profit from the situation.
The poster was made by the artist Konstantin Aleksandovich Vyalov (1900-1976), a graduate of the Stroganov School, State Free Art Workshops, VKHUTEMAS, a student of A. Lentulov, V. Kandinsky, V. Tatlin, D. Schterenberg. Together with him, he became one of the founders of the Society of Easel Workers (OST). Vyalov was a famous poster artist, graphic artist, illustrator, stage designer. In his works, he actively developed the ideas of revolutionary art.
The presented poster clearly demonstrates the artist's creative method. Bold work with color, expressive composition, bright contrasts and attention to the text - all this reflects the trends of Soviet art of the 1920s. Catchy, sometimes evocative, extremely expressive images, unquestionable agitation component and creative courage are perhaps the main distinguishing features of this era.
