Depiction of the historic town of Elbogen (today Loket/Czech Republic) with town walls, castle and other historic buildings with the river Eger in the foreground. Partly drawn in impasto with very finely worked details. Signed lower left: J. Paulus, inscribed lower right: ”Elbogen im 14. Jh.”. Label with information on the artist on the reverse. Dimensions: frame dimensions approx. 50 x 40.5 cm, image dimensions approx. 37.5 x 27.5 cm. Good condition with traces of age and use, slight staining, paint on frame with losses. Josef Paulus (1877 Elbogen - 1955 Kempten) was a German painter, illustrator and photographer. His works mainly include landscape paintings from the Bohemian region as well as copies of works by other painters such as Raphael Wehle. His oil painting Elbogen Castle was included in the collection of the Körner Museum in Dresden.
