R. Gädcke, Portrait of a Gentleman, oil on canvas, 1909 - This three-quarter view bust-length portrait of a mature gentleman is executed in oil on canvas. The depiction follows an academic realism, where the flesh tones are modelled with subtle colour transitions, while the hair and clothing exhibit a textured brushwork. The sitter wears a dark frock coat with a high collar over a white shirt and a tie against a neutral, dark background. In the upper right corner is a signature and date painted in a light colour, reading R. Gädcke 1909. The painting is stretched on a wooden stretcher and is enclosed in a magnificent, gilded frame made of wood and stucco with acanthus leaf decoration and beaded ornamentation. The reverse shows the aged canvas with significant darkening as well as the construction of the stretcher frame with corner wedges. Image size: 62 x 51 cm Frame size: 85 x 75 cm.
