In 1903, the architect Josef Hoffmann, the graphic artist and painter Koloman Moser and the Viennese industrialist Fritz Waerndorfer founded the Wiener Werkstätte as patrons based on the model of the English and Scottish Arts and Crafts movement. Historicism with its countless style imitations was opposed to the simple, appropriate and elegant. The idea of ​​the total work of art was a central element of the Wiener Werkstätte. The concept of art should be renewed on the basis of applied arts and craftsmanship. Otto Primavesi was one of the partners. The company had to constantly struggle with financial problems in the almost 30 years of its existence. Due to the global economic crisis, the most important group of buyers, the Viennese bourgeoisie, also became impoverished. The business was finally dissolved in 1932.
