After training in Weimar and stays in Paris and the Netherlands, he initially created naturalistic works with social themes. Through his involvement with the French Impressionists since 1880, he discovered the light colors and dynamic application of paint that characterize his main work. His work represents the transition from the art of the 19th century to classical modernism at the time of Wilhelminism and the Weimar Republic. He promoted this change as president of the Berlin Secession. From 1920 to 1932, he was president, then honorary president, of the Prussian Academy of Arts. As a representative of the Republic and a Jew, he left the academy in 1933 in view of the National Socialists' policy of ”Gleichschaltung” (synchronisation). Liebermann spent the last two years of his life in seclusion in his hometown of Berlin.
