After his childhood and school days in Donawitz and Bruck an der Mur, he btook up an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Graz at the age of 14, which he successfully completed after three years. This was followed by studies at the Graz State Art School with Professor Pauluzzi. In 1929, Stockbauer moved to the Academie Julian in Paris with his painter friend Ernst Paar, where he became friends with the Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher, with whom he went on a study trip to Italy in 1930. In 1936, Hans Stockbauer, who had now become a member of the Graz Secession, received the Austrian State Prize. After the war, the artist and his family moved to Vienna, where he co-founded the artist group “Der Kreis” in 1946. From 1950 onwards he developed a new technique of colored woodcuts, using which he created numerous exhibits. In the 1950s he exhibited at home and abroad. Today his works can be found in the Albertina, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, the Belvedere Museum, the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz and the Neue Galerie der Stadt Graz.
