SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 200 Eduard Thöny (1866–1950) was an important Austrian illustrator, caricaturist, and painter, best known for his long-standing collaboration with the satirical magazine Simplicissimus. Born in Brixen, the son of a woodcarver, he moved with his family to Munich in 1872, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under renowned teachers such as Defregger and Löfftz. As early as 1896, Thöny was one of Simplicissimus's most influential artists, creating over 3,400 caricatures, including many cover illustrations, by 1944. His drawings, often critical of social and military issues, were characterized by sharp observation and a realistic, often humorous style. Thöny caricatured the lives of all social classes and significantly shaped the magazine's image with his work. In addition to his work as a caricaturist, he illustrated books and devoted himself to painting, particularly hunting and equestrian scenes in the late Impressionist style. During World War I, Thöny worked as a war painter for the Imperial and Royal War Press Office, documenting the war events in realistic images. During the Nazi era, he received numerous honors, including the title of professor and the Goethe Medal, and numerous works were included in the Great German Art Exhibitions. Thöny lived in Holzhausen am Ammersee from 1908 onwards and was part of the artists' colony there. He remained a prominent observer and commentator of his time until his death in 1950.
