The New Ghetto. Theodor Herzl. First Hebrew Edition. Warsaw, 1898

The New Ghetto by Binyamin Ze'ev Herzl, in Hebrew translation by Reuven Breinin. First Hebrew edition. Warsaw, 1898.

Text on the title page: "HaGhetto HeChadash (Das neue Ghetto) by Theodor Herzl. A Play in Four Acts."

The play A New Ghetto was written at the end of 1894, in 17 days, after Herzl was exposed to antisemitism throughout Paris. The play centers around a character named Ya'akov Shmuel - an assimilated Jew who unsuccessfully seeks to integrate into European society, and meets his death in a duel for his honor against an antisemitic aristocrat. The play marked Herzl's backtracking from the idea of integrating the Jews into European society. It was initially rejected by all theaters due to its controversial content. Only in 1897, after the publication of Herzl's new vision in the book Medinat HaYehudim, was the play first printed in German, and shortly after, it was also printed in Hebrew translation.
