Historic Poster Opposing Recognition of the "National Assembly, " Signed by Giants of Jerusalem

Kol Koreh: "Insult to the Torah in our Ancestral Land" - establishment of a day of prayer upon the British government's recognition of the secular "National Assembly" as the only recognized Jewish community. Signed (in pen) by all the rabbinic leaders of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Tevet 1928.

This is the original poster, including revisions and glosses. Handwritten signatures in the margins of this original poster by 28 Askenazic, Sephardic and Yemenite rabbis and dayanim of Jerusalem, led by the rabbi of the Land of Israel, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Rabbi Ya'akov Chaim Sofer (the "Kaf HaChaim") and Rabbi Eliyahu Kletzkin (the rabbi of Lublin).

In this Kol Koreh, Jerusalem rabbis appeal to the public to gather at the Western Wall and pray to arouse mercy regarding the humiliation of the sacred, in that the government recognizes the secular community as the sole representative community of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. The rabbis write that it is appropriate to declare a fast for this, but given that Asarah B'Tevet is that same week, they request that a day of prayer be set for Sunday that week and on "Leil Shishi" in the early morning.

The poster was published in Tevet 1928 in the press and on notice boards, against the backdrop of the British government's recognition of the Zionist "National Assembly" as the only recognized Jewish community. Printed in the book by Menachem Porush, Sharsheret HaDorot B'Tekofot HaSo'arot, Volume II, p. 21.

[1] leaf. 44 cm. Typewritten with the addition of proofreading marks and the rabbis' handwritten signatures in the margins.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Minimal tears in the margins, restored with paper completions.
