Shchiyat Chemdah: Mohel Buch - service with laws and prayers for ritual circumcision, with beautiful pictures, and Sefirat HaOmer with the kavannot. Beautiful scribal script on Vellum, with color illustrations and impressive pictures, made by the talented Chaim Ben Asher Anshel. Written and painted in the town of Kittsee near Pressburg, 1769. Pocket edition.


Hand-painted title page with the images of Moshe Rabbeinu and the Decalogue, Aharon HaKohen in priestly garb, and a pair of majestic eagles above them.

In six places, the opening word is written in large letters surrounded by floral illustrations in eye-catching colors.

On leaf [8], near the passage dealing with bringing the baby to Kisseh shel Eliyahu HaNavi, there is a rare and impressive picture showing the circumcised baby on Eliyahu's chair surrounded by the mohel, the sandak and others. All are dressed in the unique style characteristic of Hungarian Jews of 18th century. Total of [8] illustrations. [6] of them are in color.

A list of circumcisions appears at the end of the volume recorded by an expert mohel attesting that he performed over 1000 ritual circumcisions!


This impressive manuscript was written and drawn by the talented hands of the scribe Chaim ben Asher Anshel of Kittsee. There are about 30 of his works known at present, preserved in the most important library and museum archives in the world. Some have even been published in facsimiles.

As in several additional works, this circumcision service is not signed, but it is definitely written by the above-mentioned scribe.

Many articles have been written about the above author and his works. Material about him is included. 


The manuscript includes: The text for ritual circumcision with instructions and customs [9 leaves], the text for birkat hamazon [9 leaves], the halachahs of circumcision in Yiddish in Tze'enah U'Re'enah script [14 leaves], the Sefirat HaOmer service [9 leaves], a list from an expert mohel - circumcisions he performed 1806-1852 [10 leaves].


Total of [51] leaves. [46] leaves written and illustrated by hand + [5] leaves of paper at the end with a list of those circumcised. 13.5 cm.

Overall fine condition. Characteristic wine stains. Fading and smudging of the ink in several places. Many usage stains in the brit milah service and in birkat hamazon. There is a small perforation in leaf [11], with a light blemish in one letter. Some of the list of those circumcised is blurry and illegible. New lining leaves. Original? impressive Vellum cover. Illustrated and painted.
