Binder of Issues of the HaLevanon Journal. Mainz, 1877-1878

The first Hebrew newspaper in the Land of Israel

Binder of issues of the newspaper HaLevanon - Michtav Iti BiSefat Ever by Dr. Meir Lehman, edited by Yechiel Brill. Mainz. On the title page: Year 14, 24 Av, 1877-25 Av, 1878.

HaLevanon was the first Hebrew newspaper in the Land of Israel. Published with breaks, and at various intervals, in Jerusalem, Paris, Mainz and London, 1863–1886. Its editor-in-chief throughout the years was Yechiel Brill. HaLevanon was founded by Yechiel Brill, Michel HaKohen and Yoel Moshe Salomon in Jerusalem in 1863. They were also the editors of the newspaper in the Land of  Israel. The first newspaper was published on the 8th of Adar, 1863. HaLevanon expressed the opinion of the Ashkenazi-Pharisaic community (the mitnagdim) in Jerusalem, opposing the idea of settling the Land of Israel (yet supporting the establishment of the Motza colony), and was hostile to the Havatzelet position (Yisrael Beck's journal, it first came out five months after HaLevanon, expressing the opinion of the Sephardim and the Chassidim, who supported the idea of settling the Land of Israel). About a year after the publication of HaLevanon, the Ottoman government closed both journals, due to informers. As a result, the newspaper's publication was moved to Mainz, where these issues were printed. During the Mainz years, Dr. Meir Lehman participated in the editing, as noted on the covers of these issues. Even while based elsewhere, HaLevanon continued to focus on matters related to the Land of Israel.
