Controversy of the Amulets and Sabbateanism: Luchot Edut by Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz. First Edition. Work of Historic Importance

"Know that Rabbeinu Yehonatan Eybeschütz was answered falsely ... and that which was spoken against said gaon ... should be burned by fire"  (from the text on the title page)

Sefer Luchot Edut is Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz's apologetic work, with missives and declarations from rabbis and other communal leaders who stood at his side against Rabbi Ya'akov Emden. First edition. Altona, 1755. Especially sought-after work. Pedigree copy.

Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz's central work, it comes in defense of his ways, against the harsh allegations from Rabbi Ya'akov Emden - the Ya'ave"tz. The next year, a book opposed to this one was printed by his great rival, Rabbi Ya'akov Emden - the Ya'ave"tz, entitled Shvirat Luchot HaOn.

This copy bears handwritten marks and corrections along its entire length. The marks refer to the book Shvirat Luchot HaOn written by the Ya'avetz in which he responded to the accusations against him in this book.

Stamps from the Strashun Library of Vilna appear along the entire length of this book. This library was established by R' Matityahu Strashun, son of the Rasha"sh. There is also a library sticker on the book with the book's serial number.

[12] 2-78 leaf, 20 cm. Leaf 63 bears an amulet in the form of a star of David prepared by Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz for a woman in childbirth (followed by a lengthy elucidation explaining its intent for the purpose of removing suspicion from those who suspected him of using Sabbatei-Tzvi-inspired amulets).

Fine condition. Aging stains. Taped reinforcements in the margins of the title page and the final leaf. Without lack to the text. Original semi-leather binding? Well-preserved with light blemishes.
