Passover Haggadah. Trieste, 1864. Magnificent, with Etchings

"Only one haggadah from the nineteenth century can be viewed as sufficiently ambitious and befitting to create a new tradition, and that is the haggadah that appeared in Trieste in 1864" (Cecil Roth)

Passover Haggadah with pictures and Italian translation by Avraham Chai Morpurgo. L’Haggada illustrata ... Trieste, 1864. Musical notes for the hymns "Adir hu, " "Adir BiMeluchah, " and "Echad Mi Yodea" appear on the last page, with a separate title page.

Magnificent haggadah with famous illustrations, it is one of the most splendid haggadahs in the history of print. It contains a large number of pictures, more than in all previously printed haggadahs. The pictures are by C. Kirchmayr, whose signature appears in the margins of the title page and whose initials are on each picture, in a total of 58 copperplate etchings.

Refer to C. Roth, "HaHaggadah HaMetzuyeret SheBiDefus" - Areshet III 1961, pp 27-28, stating "Only one haggadah from the nineteenth century can be viewed as sufficiently ambitious and befitting to create a new tradition, and that is the haggadah that appeared in Trieste in 1864."

[4], 64, [2] pp, 32 cm. Ya'ari 899; Otzar HaHaggadot 1217.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Slight tears, most of which are restored. Tears with slight lack in the title page, without damage to text.
