Chut HaShani. First Book by the Chavat Yair. Frankfurt, 1679. Signature by a Disciple of the Chata"m Sofer. Glosses

Sefer Chut HaShani - responsa by Rabbi Moshe Shimshon Bachrach and Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Bachrach, published by their son/grandson Rabbi Yair Bachrach (author of Chavat Yair) with responsa by him. Frankfurt, 1679. First edition.

The title page bears an owner's signature by a disciple of the Chatam Sofer, the gaon Rabbi David Deutch, av beit din of Battyán, Myslowitz and Zarachye [ "שייך לי לשמי זאהרויא א"ר [=אדר ראשון] תר"ל לפ"ק הק' דוד דייטש"]. Several more signatures and stamps, unidentified. Leaves 68-69 bear two signatures.

Rabbi Yair Bachrach published responsa by his father and grandfather, and added some of his own responsa. With an important preface in which he wrote that sefarim by his father and grandfather are fitting to be brought to print before his own. Indeed, this is the first book he printed, a long time before printing Chavat Yair.

Responsum in siman 10 by Rabbi Yeshayah HaLevi Horowitz, author of the Shla"h. The final responsum (siman 97) is a compilation by Rabbi Yair Bachrach about weights and measurements in Chaza"l.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi David b"r Mordechai Deutch.

Moderate condition. Adhesions on the title page and several leaves in the middle (adhesion on some of the border of the title page). Worming perforations. Usage and aging stains. Old, dismantled binding with remnants of a buckle closure.
