Discovery: Work on Rash"i's Commentary by the Ra'av"ad of Frankfurt, the Gaon Rabbi Mendele of Zamoshtch. Not Printed

Sefer Magishei Minchah - Chamishah Chumshei Torah with Rash"i's commentary and the Maspik Lashon commentary in German [in Tze'enah U'Re'enah letters]. Amsterdam, 1725. Copy that belonged to the sacred gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendele of Zamoshtch, ra'ava"d of Frankfurt during the time of the Ba'al Hafla'ah. With his signature and thousands of glosses on the entire Torah, written over many years. Complete work, apparently never printed.

Complete lengthy signature of the gaon Rabbi Mendele of Zamotsh, ra'ava"d of Frankfurt at the top of the title page: "LaHashem HaAretz U'Melo'ah, signed the youth Menachem Mendele, son, of [many honorifics] Rabbi Itzak of Zamoshtch ... 1772."

Thousands of glosses along all five chumashim, comprising a full composition on the entire Chamishah Chumshei Torah. The glosses are divided into two types: references - written in block letters; and comments - written in a curved script. (A huge project, at the time requiring phenomenal expertise in the entire Torah.) Apparently, the two types of glosses were written by the gaon Rabbi Mendele of Zamoshtch. Individual glosses may have been written in a different script.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel b"r Itzak of Zamoshtch.

[2] 238 leaf, 29 cm.

Fine condition. Aging stains. Isolated worming perforations in the first leaves. Slight tears and reinforcements to the margins of the title page (several additional leaves) without significant lack to the text. New binding.
