Scholarly Revelation: Handwritten Glosses by Rabbi Hirsch Charif, Author of 'Tiv HaGittin' on Sefer 'Ketzot HaChoshen'

"A huge genius of a man, the wonder of our generation, has come to our land" (The Chata"m Sofer about Rabbeinu)

Sefer Ketzot HaChoshen, Part II - the most renowned scholarly book of all time, by the leading gaon of Galicia, the gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib Heller, known as 'Ba'al HaKetzot HaChoshen' (in Yeshivish slang, "The Ketzois"). First edition. Lemberg, 1796. Stefansky, Sifrei Yessod 185. Lacking the title page.

Personal copy that belonged to the gaon hageonim, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Charif (Heller), one of the leading geonim of Galicia in the Ketzot HaChoshen's generation. Many glosses appear along the length of the sefer [approximately 120 lines!] handwritten by Rabbi Hirsch Charif. The glosses refer to many of his contemporary rabbinic leaders and their predecessors, including: Machaneh Ephraim, Shev Ya'akov, Shu"t Pnei Moshe and more. The glosses were not printed in his sefer, Tiv Gittin, nor in his other sefarim, and to the best of our knowledge, have never been printed.

As is known, when the sefer Ketzot HaChoshen was published, it shook the world with its genius to the point that the author of Netivot Mishpat authored his renowned work as a critique of Sefer Ketzot HaChoshen. (In response, the 'Ketzot' wrote the work Meshovev Netivot) as a response to the Netivot's critique, who in turn authored Ya'ir Netiv as a response to the Meshovev Netivot 's response - but it was printed only after the Ketzot had already passed away.)

Dozens of unknown glosses on the Ketzot by Rabbi Hirsch Charif - a giant in the generation of the most famous. These include some lengthy glosses that cover several lines each. The glosses will certainly arouse much interest in the study halls of yeshivahs and kollels, where Sefer Ketzot HaChoshen is one of the most important and studied in-depth scholarly works.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Heller (aka Rabbi Hirsch Charif).
