Chatam Sofer, First Edition. Glosses by the Gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld of Golub, Closest Disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger

"He is heard of across the entire Jewish Diaspora ...

Because his sacred words are very precious to them ...

In the Holy Land they are also aware of his fame ..."

Sefer Chatam Sofer, Even HaEzer section. Responsa from the rabbi of the entire Jewish people, Rabbi Moshe Sofer. Two parts bound together with separate title pages. Pressburg, 1858-1859. First edition of the Chatam Sofer. Copy that belonged to the renowned gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld, av beit din of Golub, who was Rabbi Akiva Eiger's closest disciple and lived in the Eiger home like one of his children.

The title page of the first part bears an owner's notation regarding the book's ownership by the gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld, in his son's handwriting: "Belongs to my father, the great light, Rabbi Baruch, ga'ava"d and community leader of Golub ... signed, his son and disciple, Ya'akov Moshe Rosenfeld." Many glosses, some of which are extremely lengthy, appear on the leaves of both parts of the book [approximately 85 lines], handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld.

The glosses demonstrate that the writer - like all rabbinic leaders of Hungary during the Chatam Sofer's time - was in awe of the Chatam Sofer, and spoke of him with great deference. Glosses open with expressions such as: "I am dust at his feet"; "I have not been privileged to comprehend." But in the way of Torah, he also occasionally questions or disputes him. It may be that the reason he permitted himself to write these notes was that he felt like he was part of the Chatam Sofer's family, due to his being Rabbi Akiva Eiger's closest disciple, to the point that he was called "The Rav's bachur, " and was truly as one of Rabbi Akiva Eiger's children.
