A Letter from Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer. 1912
A letter in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beit Din of Paks [Hungary], dated: 1912.
A responsum which he wrote to Rabbi Shmuel Meir Hollander, Av Beit Din and Dayan of Czernowitz. In-depth halachic discussion regarding one who agreed on the eve of Pesach to buy chametz from a non-Jew after Pesach. He discusses the question of whether this is 'rotzeh b'kiyumo', and brings proofs to permit it from the Talmud and Poskim [Chatam Sofer, Sefer Likutei Sofer and more].
Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer [1861-1918], author of "Yalkut Sofer". One of the well-known Hungarian Rabbis. Son of Rabbi Zussman Sofer, Av Beit Din of Paks. A student of the Pressburg Yeshiva and one of the foremost students of the Bonyhad yeshiva, where he studied from Rabbis Zekil Pollack and his son Rabbi Moshe Pollack. Son-in-law of Rabbi David Yehuda Pollack, son of his great teacher Rabbi Zekil.
The letter's recipient, Rabbi Shmuel Meir Kahana Hollander - Av Beit Din and Dayan in Czernowitz, immigrated to Israel after the Holocaust, where he served as the Rabbi of the Neveh Tzedek neighborhood of Tel Aviv, had a close relationship with the Tchebiner Rav, Rabbi Aharon of Belz and the Chazon Ish. A disciple of Rabbi Shlomo of Bobov, had a close relationship with the Rebbes of Belz, Ruzhin, Vizhnitz and Sanz.
