Treasure Trove: [202] Booklets [Approximately 10,000 Pages] Handwritten by the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Yehudah Hirsch, Av Beit Din of Zwolle [Holland]

Huge collection of [202] booklets containing close to ten thousand pages - derashot, Torah novellae and more, all handwritten by the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Yehudah Hirsch, chief rabbi of the Overijssel region in Northern Holland, in its capital city, Zwolle. Zwolle, 1900-1940. Dutch and some Hebrew. The collection has not been examined at all, yet it certainly contains valuable historic information about the Jewish community in Holland and its members

It is interesting to note what is written in his sefer,  Shmuel B'Kor'ei Shemo (Israel, 2013, p. 41), where it mentions his manuscripts: "After his passing, most of his correspondence was taken to be preserved in the office of the Dutch rabbinate because many of the questions it deals with are complex issues of possible illegitimate parentage, pesulei yuchsin, and their exposure could cause familial blemishes."

Some of the booklets were written in 1940-41, right around when the Nazis entered Holland. They may contain details about the fate of the Jews of Holland during the Holocaust. Shmuel B'Kor'ei Shemo (p 72), states about that period: "After the events of Kristallnacht in Germany, Dutch Jews were shaken, and deeply concerned about the fate of German Jews. At the time, Rabbi Hirsch wrote a letter with words of encouragement in the Dutch Agudat Yisrael newsletter, which was published all over Holland ... Rabbi Hirsch was esteemed by the authorities as a guarantor for any Jew who wanted to escape to Dutch territory, to the extent the local police chief of Zwolle at the time observed: 'As long as Chief Rabbi Hirsch has ink in his pen, he will sign a personal guarantee for every Jew.'"

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Yehudah Hirsch.
