Rare: Stunning Letter from the Gaon of Jewish Thought, Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner, Author of Pachad Yitzchak

"I shall build a sanctuary in my heart for the glory of His honor, and place an altar in the mishkan to radiate His splendor. For a ner tamid, I will take the fire of the akeidah, and I will sacrifice my unique soul to Him"

(The Pachad Yitzchak's renowned song)

Early and lyrically written letter of blessings, hauntingly beautiful and saturated with longing. Entirely handwritten in the famous golden words of the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner, renowned also as the author of Pachad Yitzchak. Sent to one of his disciples upon the latter's marriage. Berlin, 1930.

"To my beloved disciple, the sounds of joy and the sounds of gladness say - cleave, all is goodness!" It is a time of emergency, when governments are suspicious of each other, and people who are close are distanced by force. As such, we are obliged to suffice with a meager little piece of paper. But believe me, my precious, that my heart is with you! So please accept this blessing from the depths of my heart: "May your life be crowned with success everywhere you turn, now and forever. May you arise ever higher in Torah and fear of G-d. May your home - which you are now building - be a hearth of Torah and wisdom. May all your heart's desires be fulfilled for the good. These are the prayers of all your brothers and mine, among them - Yitzchak Hutner."

This letter was sent in the very special period in the Pachad Yitzchak's life, after he completed his studies at the Slobodka yeshivah in Chevron, where he was sent by the Alter to establish the yeshivah, and before he was appointed as rosh yeshivah of Chaim Berlin - the oldest yeshivah in America. In this interesting era, alongside his Torah studies, the Pachad Yitzchak supplemented his studies at the University of Berlin. This would obviously not take place in our days, and even then it was the path of only a select few - only those of solid faith that no strong wind could stir, those destined to lead the next generation, those capable of and even occasionally required to be educated in other fields in order to know what to respond to an apikores, "not to study in order to practice, but to study to understand and to instruct." At the same time, the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the gaon Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik studied at the University. The three kept in contact as they led American Jewry.
