"Long life and all good": A letter to a benefactor handwritten by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld and leading rabbis of Jerusalem
A beautifully written letter to a generous benefactor, on elegant stationery from the Diskin Orphanage, signed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, the leader of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel, along with other great rabbis of the time. Jerusalem, 1930 (5690).
The letter, dated the eve of Rosh Hashanah 5691, was sent to Mrs. Keila Barash, who provided exceptional support to the orphanage. The rabbis bless her with health, happiness, and joy, as well as long life and all good: "A good, healthy, happy, and joyful year, long life and all good" (in both Yiddish and Hebrew).
Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1849–1932) was one of the leading Torah scholars of his generation and a prominent leader of the Orthodox Jewish community in the Land of Israel. A disciple of the "Ketav Sofer" and Rabbi Avraham Shag, he served as the first rabbi of the "Edah HaChareidis" in Jerusalem. Renowned for his righteousness, sanctity, and exceptional wisdom, he earned the title "Master of the Land of Israel."
The letter contains Rabbi Sonnenfeld's signature and two additional signatures written in their own handwriting. The signatures of Rabbi Shalom Yitzchak Reshkess and Rabbi Eliyahu Klatzkin appear as facsimile stamps in their handwriting style.
[1] official letterhead, 29 cm. Two original envelopes are included.
