”And tear this letter immediately after reading it” – A letter from the great sage Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan of Kovno - A highly significant and rare letter from the ”leader of the generation, ” the great Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno, the foremost halachic authority and respondent of his time, as well as the head of the Torah, communal, and political leadership of Orthodox Jewry. Kovno, 5th of Kislev, 1882. Not printed! This is a long letter (approximately 300 words), containing exceptional rabbinic, Torah, and historical content, discussing the struggles of the Jewish community in the turbulent period leading up to World War I, from the perspective of the era’s leading figure. From the unusually candid tone of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan, it is clear that this letter was sent to a close rabbinic confidant, whom he refers to as ”my dear friend.” In this correspondence, the leader of the generation opens his heart about the dire state of the Jewish people and how this situation has severely impacted his personal health. After signing the letter, he reiterates a warning to its recipient: ”And tear this letter immediately after reading it... and do not show it to anyone at all. Topics in the Letter - The St. Petersburg Conference, which deeply distressed him:   ”Since my return from my successful journey to the royal city of St. Petersburg... there, I was filled with grief and sorrow... and the fear is immense, G-d have mercy.”   (Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan was the only rabbi invited to the 1882 Conference of Jewish Leaders in St. Petersburg, which attempted to devise solutions to mitigate the anti-Jewish pogroms and persecutions.) - The principle of ”Chazaka” (presumption of ownership) in Torah law, and his instruction to avoid its application whenever possible:   ”I suffer greatly from the practices of strongholds (Chazakot) that have become common among us... for they have greatly increased the accusers and critics against us... even from among the Jews themselves... for in our country, it is currently difficult to rule in this matter due to the intensity of the slander and informers rising against us.” - His declining health due to the challenges he faced:   ”I have been filled with grief and sorrow... I suffer greatly... I lack the strength to write and express the magnitude of my heartbreak... the great council of my Jewish brethren that accompanied me in St. Petersburg caused me great distress... the writer, with a broken heart.”  Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor (1817-1897) The leading halachic authority and respondent of his generation, he was known as ”Rashkebag” (Rav shel kol Bnei HaGolah). He was the head of the Torah, communal, and political leadership of world Jewry in his time and served as the Av Beit Din (chief rabbinical judge) of Kovno for decades. His approach was to be lenient when possible, following the principle ”Koach d'heteira adif”. He primarily authored responsa, including She'elot U'Teshuvot Be'er Yitzchak (Königsberg, 1858), She'elot U'Teshuvot Nachal Yitzchak, She'elot U'Teshuvot Ein Yitzchak, and more.
