Holy Cotton Pants of the Great Kabbalist Baba Sali - ”...A holy linen tunic he shall wear, and linen pants shall be upon his flesh...they are holy garments!” (Leviticus 16) A pair of sacred linen pants worn by one of the greatest Kabbalists of the last generations, Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, the Baba Sali. These cotton pants were worn by Baba Sali for many years directly on his pure body, with no barrier, as explained in the Talmud regarding the priestly garments (Yoma 23b): ”How do we know that nothing shall precede the priestly pants? As it is stated, 'and linen pants shall be upon his flesh.'” These pants were given as a segulah (spiritual protection and blessing) for safeguarding and success to Baba Sali’s legendary assistant, Rabbi Eliyahu Alfasi, who served him faithfully for 14 years. Rabbi Alfasi was known for his close bond with Baba Sali, who affectionately declared, ”If I could tie you with the straps of my tefillin so you wouldn’t leave me, I would do so.” The importance of objects used by holy individuals has been widely recognized in the Hasidic tradition, with many accounts of miracles and blessings associated with them. It is said of Rabbi Mordechai of Neshchiz that he claimed to have the power to perform miracles using a tool given to him by his teacher, Rabbi Michel of Zlotshov (*Divrei Binah*, p. 47). The Baal Shem Tov also taught, as cited by his grandson in *Degel Machaneh Ephraim*, that everything connected to a righteous person—even their clothing—bears sparks of their soul. Similarly, the Chatam Sofer wrote that a person’s garments absorb their holiness, which can influence others for good when worn thereafter. This rare and sacred personal artifact, worn directly on Baba Sali's body without any barrier, is said to bring blessings for sustenance (related to the attribute of Yesod), matchmaking (as priestly pants atone for sins of immorality), healing, and protection. Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira (1889–1984), son of Rabbi Masoud, the chief rabbi of Tafilalt (Morocco), and grandson of the holy sage, the ”Abir Yaakov.” He served as the rabbi of Erfoud, Morocco. In his later years, he immigrated to Israel and settled in the town of Netivot. Revered as a saint, he performed wonders and miracles reminiscent of the great sages of old. His blessings were known to come true exactly as spoken. He was universally respected across all communities—Ashkenazi and Sephardi alike—and drew thousands to his door seeking blessings and salvation, including leading rabbis and Admorim.
