A Large Proclamation of Prayer ”Long Live the King” in Honor of the Birthday of Sultan Abdul Hamid Khan. Jerusalem, Late 19th Century. Extremely Rare! - A large colored prayer proclamation in honor of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid Khan. Arranged by Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the Rabbi of the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem, calling for all the Jewish residents of Jerusalem to pray on Tuesday, the 17th of Tevet, which was the Sultan’s birthday that year. No printer or publication year is indicated. To the best of our knowledge, this proclamation is not known in bibliography. ”O Almighty God! Who appoints kings and crowns them with grace and mercy! We, Your servants, the Children of Israel, residing in the holy city of Jerusalem...” The prayer is printed in two columns: the right column in Ottoman Turkish (in Arabic script) and the left column in Hebrew. A rare historical document, reflecting the Jewish community's expressions of loyalty to the Ottoman Sultan in the late 19th century.
