The Book of Psalms of the Great Ruzhin Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael of Husiatyn – With a Handwritten Annotation - A historic and deeply significant Book of Psalms, personally owned and used by one of the greatest Ruzhin Rebbes of his time, the ”Master of Divine Inspiration, ” Rabbi Yisrael of Husiatyn. He was the direct grandson, the son of the son, of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, and according to Ruzhin tradition, a descendant of King David, the author of Psalms. Provenance and Personal Annotation On the title page appears the personal ownership stamp of the Rebbe: ”The Library of Yisrael Friedman of Husiatyn.” Additional stamps from the Rebbe’s Beit Midrash in Tel Aviv. Between the pages of the Psalms, ”kvittlach” (petition notes) from Chassidim seeking his blessings are inserted. On page 112, there is a printing error in the verse: ”פעמים רבות יצלים” (instead of ”יצילם”). The mistake is underlined in pencil, and in the margin, the Rebbe seemingly corrected it in his own handwriting, writing: ”יצילם”. This is an extraordinary spiritual artifact, a sacred segulah book used by a renowned miracle worker. With this very Psalms book, the Rebbe prayed for years on behalf of individuals and the collective, achieving miraculous salvations beyond nature. The Power of Psalms in the Ruzhin Dynasty The Rebbes of Ruzhin were known to bring about wondrous salvations through the recitation of Psalms, as they were descendants of King David. Rebbe Nachum of Shtefanesht once said about Rebbe David Moshe of Chortkov, the uncle of the Rebbe of Husiatyn: ”When Rebbe David Moshe takes the Book of Psalms in his hands, G-d says to him: ‘David Moshe, My son, the entire world is in your hands—do with it as you please.’” It is also well known that the Book of Psalms belonging to Rebbe David Moshe of Chortkov was considered a powerful segulah (spiritual remedy)—anyone who recited Psalms from it was immediately saved. Rebbe Yisrael Friedman of Husiatyn (1858–1949) The senior Ruzhiner Rebbe of his generation and the last direct grandson of the Holy Rebbe of Ruzhin (he was the son of Rebbe Mordechai Shraga Feivish of Husiatyn, son of Rebbe Yisrael of Ruzhin). All the great Torah figures of his time referred to him as ‘holy, holy.’ In the Belz dynasty, it is known that when Rebbe Aharon of Belz referred to ”the Rebbe”, without specifying a name, he meant Rebbe Yisrael of Husiatyn. He even described him as ”a Tzaddik, the foundation of the world.” Before his passing, his Chassidim noticed his lips moving, and they heard him repeating one verse over and over: ”Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.” (Psalms 145:13) The Legendary Episode of Rebbe Yisrael of Husiatyn and General Rommel A famous story appears in numerous sources: When the Nazi general Erwin Rommel advanced toward the Land of Israel, Rebbe Yisrael of Husiatyn gathered his followers near the tomb of the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh in Jerusalem. He stood still for a long time, his face buried in his Book of Psalms. Then, suddenly, he lifted his face and declared: ”The oppressor will have no dominion over our land.” Later, he told his close disciple that he had seen the Holy Name of G-d shining in golden letters over the tomb, and at that moment, he knew that victory was assured. It is not unlikely that this very Psalms book, printed just ten years before this event, was the same one he used that day, as it explicitly contains the Names of G-d and mystical combinations.
