Zikaron Yosef – First Edition with Rare Anti-Hasidic Introduction, Handwritten Annotation - Responsa Zikaron Yosef, containing halachic rulings and novellae by Rabbi Yosef Steinhardt, Rabbi of Fürth. First edition, Fürth, 1773 (תקל”ג). Significance & Controversy This edition includes the rare introductory pages, which feature a harsh critique of the Hasidic movement. According to the Bibliographic Project, the introduction was torn out of most copies by Hasidim. Written in Nissan 1773, the author cites passages from ”Zemir Arizim VeCharvot Tzurim” (printed 1772), a book against Hasidism. He criticizes Hasidic customs, stating that they ”turn most of their days into holidays, pray with chirping and groaning, and utter strange sounds, changing various traditions.” He refers to the arrival of Hasidic leaders in Ashkenaz (Germany), specifically Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg and Rabbi Pinchas of Frankfurt (author of ”HaPela’ah”), both disciples of the Maggid of Mezeritch, who were appointed as rabbis in Germany. Rabbi Steinhardt attributes the loss of his children and grandchildren as a divine punishment for his actions against Hasidism. About the Author Rabbi Yosef Steinhardt [1720–1776] was a prominent posek and a disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Katz (author of ”Shev Yaakov”). Served as Rabbi of Fürth and was considered one of the leading Torah scholars of his era. Engaged in halachic correspondence with major rabbinic figures in Hungary, Italy (Verona), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), and Switzerland. Opposed Hasidism, aligning with other prominent Ashkenazi rabbinic leaders of the time. Notable students: Rabbi Mordechai Banet Rabbi Moshe Tuvia Sondheim, Rabbi of Hanau Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim, and many other great scholars.
