First Edition. - About the Author: The Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor (1817-1896) served as the chief rabbi of Kovno. He was among the greatest halachic authorities of his generation, referred to as ”Rashkaba’hag” (Raban Shel Kol Bnei HaGolah – ”Rabbi of All Diaspora Jewry”). In 1864, he was appointed rabbi of Kovno, a position he held for 32 years until his passing. He played a leading role in Torah leadership, public affairs, and Jewish political matters. His greatest strength was as a halachic decisor and responder. His writings are marked by vast knowledge, sharp reasoning, analytical ability, and exceptional organization. His responsa are structured with rules, details, simanim, and branches, making him the foremost halachic authority of his time. Rabbi Spektor was particularly renowned for his rulings on Agunot, a complex and sensitive area of Jewish law, which he viewed as a great mitzvah.
