Tractate Yevamot with Commentaries. Printed by R' Aharon and R' Naftali, Sons of R' Meshulam Zalman. Sulzbach, 1767 - Following the title page appears a section titled ”Alternative Readings and Corrections, ” incorporating textual variations and glosses from the Maharshal, Maharam, Maharsha, and R' Manoach Hendel, author of Chochmat Manoach. This edition of the Talmud was at the center of a major controversy, which began with the earlier edition printed by R' Meshulam Zalman, the father of the printers of this edition, and continued into the printing of this edition as well. The Proops printing house in Amsterdam claimed exclusive rights to print the Talmud, based on approbations they had received for their edition (Amsterdam, 1752–1765). The Council of Four Lands issued severe rulings, ordering that the tractates printed in Sulzbach be burned or buried. However, many rabbinic authorities supported the Sulzbach edition. The Noda B'Yehuda ultimately intervened in an attempt to resolve the dispute, which had already escalated beyond a simple conflict over printing rights. Eventually, halachic rulings permitted the use of the Sulzbach Talmud edition, even according to those who held that it was printed under a ban (Shu”t Zichron Yosef, Furth, 1773, Choshen Mishpat, Siman 2).
