The personal copy of the Gaon Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin and initiator of the Daf Yomi program. On the title page appears an early ownership stamp of Rabbi Meir Shapiro from his tenure as Rabbi of Piotrków. Additionally, the book bears stamps from the library of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin. [It is well known that Rabbi Meir Shapiro had no children of his own, and after founding the yeshiva, he took up residence there with his wife and transferred his personal library to the yeshiva’s collection.] On leaf 29a appears a long, brilliant scholarly gloss — approximately 46 words — in the handwriting of Rabbi Meir Shapiro himself. Due to rebinding, the bottom margin of the gloss has been slightly cut. The famed Gaon Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin (1887–1933), Rabbi of Lublin, was a towering figure of Polish Jewry. He married the daughter of Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Breitman and moved to Tarnopol in Galicia, where he immersed himself in Torah study with his father-in-law supporting him. A man of vision and action, Rabbi Shapiro was a Torah giant who revolutionized Jewish learning by founding Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin. He was one of the great leaders of Agudath Israel and introduced the visionary concept of Daf Yomi at the Knessiah Gedolah. At the request of the Rebbe of Gur, he served as a member of the Polish Sejm (parliament). Rabbi Meir Shapiro passed away at the young age of 47. Shortly beforehand, he had taken out a large life insurance policy, and upon his passing, the payout saved the yeshiva from its financial debts, enabling it to continue operating.
