The 'cylinder' hat of the first Chief Rabbi of Israel, the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog - The famous and unique 'cylinder' hat customarily worn by the first Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog. [Early 20th century]. The hat was manufactured by the veteran London hat company SCOTT & CO [still active today]. The hat is made of fine material, apparently felt, which has remained stiff as it was when it left the factory, and has preserved its original precise shape to this day. The crown of the hat is adorned with a black fabric band tied into a bow, and the interior is lined with silk bearing the company’s printed name. Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog [1888–1959], Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel – and from 1948, of the State of Israel until his passing. Previously, he served as the Chief Rabbi of Irish Jewry. In 1908, he was ordained by Rabbi Yosef Shluffer, Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, and the Ridbaz. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said in his eulogy of him: “He was the leader of Israel, loved justice and hated evil, and always sought merit for the people of Israel… He risked his life to save Jewish children…” His son Mr. Chaim Herzog served as the sixth President of the State of Israel. His grandson, named after him, Mr. Yitzchak [Isaac] Herzog, serves as the 11th President of the State of Israel. Moderate-good condition. Scuffing. Minor flaws.
