A distinguished and luxurious copy of the renowned collection of sermons by Rabbi Azaria Figo, one of the great Italian sages of the 17th century. Listed in Stefansky, Sifrei Yesod, no. 490. Catalogued as ”Rare” in the National Library of Israel. This is the first printing of Bina Le’Itim, one of the most influential and frequently reprinted books of derashot (homiletics), studied and cited by generations of rabbis and preachers. At the beginning of the work is an introduction by the author’s student, Rabbi Moshe Zacuto (the Ramaz). Notable Features: Ownership inscriptions and handwritten glosses appear on the title page, on the final leaf, and on leaf 147/1. These notes are from the period of printing or shortly thereafter, though their content has not yet been studied. Glosses on leaf 147/1 consist of two single-word annotations. Rabbi Azaria Figo (1579–1647), author of Bina Le’Itim, was one of the most prominent Torah scholars in Italy. A disciple of Rabbi Yishmael Hanagid, author of Be’er Sheva, and teacher of leading rabbis such as Rabbi Shmuel Aboab (Devar Shmuel) and Rabbi Moshe Zacuto (Ramaz). He gained renown throughout the Jewish world for his works, including: Gidulei Terumah, a foundational commentary on Sefer HaTerumot, often quoted by the Shach in his commentary on the Shulchan Aruch. Bina Le’Itim, his celebrated collection of sermons, went through dozens of reprints and became a model for generations of preachers. According to the Chida in Shem HaGedolim, Rabbi Figo also authored responsa (now lost) and wrote a Torah scroll that was flawless in every detail—without a single error in spelling or letter formation.
