Manuscript in the handwriting of the holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, foremost disciple of the Vilna Gaon in Kabbalah - ”Seraphim stood above him” A Kabbalistic manuscript spanning [2] written pages [approximately 750 words], in the holy handwriting of the foremost disciple of the Vilna Gaon in Kabbalah and his primary transmitter of esoteric teachings—the holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, leader of the Aliyah of the Vilna Gaon’s disciples to Jerusalem. Autograph. [Early 19th century]. The manuscript addresses the structure of the Mishkan, corresponding to the form of the upper worlds, and is filled with profound Kabbalistic secrets. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov testified that the Vilna Gaon continued to reveal himself to him after his passing, and continued to teach him the secrets of Kabbalah (see the introduction to Kitvei HaGraMM”M, vol. I, pp. 12–13). The insights before us are indeed written in the style of the Gaon himself, especially his unique approach of merging the revealed and hidden dimensions of Torah into one unified system. Beyond the historical and Torah value of these Kabbalistic innovations from the Beit Midrash of our master the Vilna Gaon, the sacred pages—filled with secrets of Kabbalah and Holy Names—are also of exceptional segulah value, being in the very handwriting of one of the greatest Kabbalists of Lithuania. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov [d. 1827], among the greatest disciples of the Vilna Gaon, and foremost in the wisdom of Kabbalah. He served the Gaon during the last two years of his life and “was beloved by his teacher, who revealed to him his secrets and innermost thoughts and entrusted him with the keys to the treasures of both the revealed and hidden Torah” (Aliyot Eliyahu). Rabbi Menachem Mendel wrote of this time: “And Hashem granted me favor in his eyes and I served him with all my strength. During those two years minus a third that I was with him, I did not leave him—I held him and did not let go. I did not depart from his tent day or night. Wherever he went, I went; wherever he lodged, I lodged. My hand never left his at all. He opened for me the gate of wisdom and told me many precious openings…” After the Gaon’s passing, Rabbi Menachem Mendel took upon himself the task of arranging and publishing the Gaon’s writings, such as his renowned commentary on Mishlei, the commentary on the Haggadah, and glosses on Seder Olam. In 1806, he published the Gaon’s commentary on Sefer Yetzirah and his commentary on Yoreh De’ah. In 1808, Rabbi Menachem Mendel led a group of the Gaon’s disciples on aliyah to Eretz Yisrael, settling in Tiberias and Safed. After the earthquake, he led the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem. He was especially renowned for his profound and lofty insights in Kabbalah. While in Eretz Yisrael, he authored deep Kabbalistic works. Some of these writings were published in 2001 under the title Kitvei HaGraMM”M. In his writings, he describes heavenly visions, revelations of Torah secrets from above, and the appearance of the Vilna Gaon’s soul guiding him in the secrets of Torah.
