Validation deed of the will of the late R' Shraga Feivish HaCohen (Katz), signed by the Jerusalem judges—Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant, and Rabbi Binyamin David of Vilna. Jerusalem, Cheshvan 5612 [1851]. Early document. On the first page appears a lengthy account of the words of the deceased, who issued the will on his deathbed, with the signatures of two witnesses and the signature of the testator. On the second page: a legal ruling confirming the will, signed by the Jerusalem judges—Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant, and Rabbi Binyamin David of Vilna. Rabbi Shmuel Salant [1816–1909], the revered Rabbi of Jerusalem for about seventy years and the leader of all Ashkenazi communities in the Land of Israel. He was renowned from youth as a genius and prodigy. In 1841, he was invited to the Land of Israel to serve as rabbi of Jerusalem and leader of the Perushim community. He established institutions of education and charity in the city, founded the rabbinical court, and solidified the Ashkenazi community. He was a renowned halachic authority with phenomenal memory and keen insight. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, in his approbation to Adarat Shmuel (Jerusalem 2014), wrote: “The genius of Israel, whose glory illuminated the land, famed throughout the world for his Torah and wisdom... uniquely powerful in halachic rulings... and widely known for his tremendous holiness.” Rabbi Uri Shabtai Salant was born in Oshmiana in 1800 to his father R. Chaim. He immigrated to the Land of Israel around 1830. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant and one of the founding members of the first rabbinical court established by his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, in 1841. He was also among the founders of the Talmud Torah at the Hurva of Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid. His wife, Mrs. Chana, daughter of Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant, passed away the day after her father, on 4 MarCheshvan 1865. Rabbi Binyamin David, son of Rabbi Shmuel of Vilna (1813–1893), immigrated to Jerusalem in 1839 and was a member of the first rabbinical court established by Rabbi Shmuel Salant.
