On the page following the title page: approbation from the Admor Maharash of Lubavitch, followed by the author’s stamp and his handwritten signature: “Na’um Avraham David Lavut, Moreh Tzedek of the holy community of Nikolayev.” The author, the esteemed and chassidic gaon Rabbi Avraham David Lavut [1815–1890], was one of the great rabbis and Chabad chassidim, and a disciple of the Tzemach Tzedek. He served for forty years as the rabbi of Nikolayev (Kherson province, Ukraine) and its surroundings, and authored several well-known sefarim. Rabbi Avraham David was renowned for his sharp intellect, exceptional talents, and broad knowledge of the Talmud. His piety also earned him many admirers who held him in great affection throughout his life. He also authored Kav Naki on the laws of divorce documents, and edited and added notes to Torah Or and Sha'ar HaKolel by the Alter Rebbe of Lubavitch. He was the great-grandfather of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson—his granddaughter was Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, the Rebbe’s mother. [4], 360 pages. 32.5 cm.
