First edition printed from the manuscript that was sent from the Land of Israel. Amsterdam, 1702. Rabbeinu Yosef b”r Meir Halevi Ibn Migash, the “HaR”Y Migash” (1077–1141) – a renowned posek from the era of the Rishonim, foremost disciple of the Rif, and his successor as head of the yeshiva, among the great rabbis of Spain. One of the early sages of Spain who authored commentaries on the Talmudic tractates. In the Rif’s will, it was written about him that “even in the generation of Moshe Rabbeinu, there would not have been one like him, ” and the Rambam wrote about him in the introduction to the Mishnah: “the heart of this man in the Talmud strikes fear into anyone who examines his words and the depth of his intellect in analysis, to the extent that it could nearly be said of him that there was no king like him in his manner and conduct.” On the title page of the present volume it is written that he was “disciple of the Rif and teacher of the Rambam, of blessed memory, ” for the Rambam regarded him as his teacher. However, it is generally accepted today that the R”Y Migash was in fact the teacher of Rabbi Maimon the Dayan, the Rambam’s father, and had already passed away while the Rambam was still too young to be his disciple.
