Manuscript – Unpublished Commentary on the Torah. Persia, 19th Century. Autograph - Manuscript – Sermons and Novellae on the Weekly Torah Portions and Haftarot; Pirkei Avot and Tehillim; along with Kabbalistic Discourses and Various Compilations. By Rabbi Yehoshua ben Yosef. [Persia, 19th Century]. Eastern script in Persian style. Autographic writing by the author, who signs in several places in the manuscript: ”The young Yehoshua, awaiting salvation, son of Yosef, may he be protected.” In two places, the year 1878 (5638) appears; in another place it states: ”Written on Friday, the 24th of Tevet, [5]641 [1881!], when my teacher Rabbi Yechezkel was reading the Torah for Esther daughter of Binyamin, of blessed memory.” On leaf [48a], the author quotes from the Quran (in Arabic, in Hebrew script): ”And this deed too is good to preach to the congregation, for it is from the Quran of Mohammed, which says: 'O son of man...'” (This is actually a citation from the Hadith according to Shi'ite tradition, not from the Quran itself). On leaf [160a], he copies a ketubah text from Kashan dated 1880, and on the final page a get text from Isfahan dated 1862. On leaf [146a], in a passage dealing with palmistry and physiognomy, he writes: ”And I testify… when I took my wife, I saw on her hand a very short line of life and I feared she would die on me, and indeed she fell ill and nearly died that year… and then she grew another line near the line of life, two more lines, and her hand extended, and she lived long.” The author, Rabbi Yehoshua, was a distinguished disciple of Mullah Rabbi Yitzchak, grandson of the Or Shraga.
