Vocalized Taj with Masorah and Glosses [Yemen, 15th–16th Century] - Manuscript – Taj [“Keter Torah”], containing portions of the Pentateuch: Vayikra and Devarim. Square, elegant, and precise script, in ink on thick, high-quality paper. With vocalization, cantillation marks, Targum, and Masoretic notes. [Yemen, 15th–16th century]. The verses of Scripture and Targum are written sequentially — one verse of Scripture followed by its corresponding Targum verse. The biblical verses are vocalized with lower (standard) punctuation, while the Targum verses are vocalized with upper punctuation [above the letters]. In several places, bent (looped) “Pe” letters appear. Along the margins of the text appears the Masorah — notes and signs that accompany the biblical text to ensure its accurate writing and reading, as transmitted to Moshe at Sinai. The “small Masorah” is written alongside the text, and the “large Masorah” appears in expanded form in the upper and lower margins of the pages. In several places, parashah markers — the letters “פ” (for open parashah) and “ס” (for closed parashah) — are written within decorative embellishments. Some of the margins include lengthy notes and glosses by an unidentified Yemenite sage. Taj [تاج; “Crown”] is the term used by Yemenite Jews for a book containing the Five Books of the Torah written according to the Masorah, and sometimes including the Masoretic notes as well.
