A Fascinating Halachic Responsum by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef – On Reading Bialik’s “Sefer HaAggadah” – 1974 - A halachic responsum written by Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef regarding the permissibility of reading Sefer HaAggadah (The Book of Legends) compiled by H.N. Bialik and others In his response, Rabbi Ovadia addresses the question of whether one may read such works, considering that they were compiled by individuals who were not “among the faithful of Israel.” He notes that there is a halachic dispute on the matter Rabbi Ovadia Yosef (1920–2013), Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel (Rishon LeZion), spiritual leader and President of the Council of Torah Sages of the Shas Party, was the leading Sephardic authority of his generation and widely known as the Posek HaDor (halachic authority of the generation). His tenure is considered the golden era of Sephardic Jewry in Israel. His funeral was attended by approximately half a million people – the largest funeral in Israel’s history [1] leaf, official letterhead from his tenure as Rishon LeZion and Chief Rabbi of Israel.
