This Haggadah is among the most heavily censored editions ever printed. For example, in the passage “Ha Lachma Anya, ” it reads: “Hashta avdei ‘bedukhtin tuva’” (“This year we are slaves in good places”) … “L’shana haba’a bnei chorin ‘kiv’ar’a didan’” (“Next year free men in our land”). In the passage “V’Hi She’amda, ” the text concludes with: “And the Holy One, blessed be He, saved us from their hand, ” omitting mention of the enemies. The entire paragraph of “Shefoch Chamat’cha” was completely omitted. This censorship reflects the deep fear felt by the printers under the oppression of the Russian Czar.
