Sha’ar Mishpat – The Copy of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. - Sha’ar Mishpat on Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat, Part II. By Rabbi Yisrael Isser ben Ze’ev Wolf. Mohyliv, 1812. First edition. A rare book. The present copy belonged to the rabbi of Jerusalem, and he inscribed his name twice in his own handwriting together with his seal on the title page, and once more on the following leaf. Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1816–1909), the revered rabbi of Jerusalem for nearly seventy years, and leader of all Ashkenazic communities in Eretz Israel. He was renowned as a genius and prodigy from his youth. In 1841, he was invited to Eretz Israel to serve in the rabbinate of Jerusalem and in the leadership of the Perushim community. He founded the city’s educational and charitable institutions, established a Beit Din, and consolidated the Ashkenazic community. He became known as an outstanding halachic authority with a prodigious memory, as well as for his great astuteness. This is a book with Rabbi Shmuel Salant’s handwritten signatures, unlike the more commonly found examples with his stamped seal. 76 leaves. 34.5 cm. Bluish paper. Good condition.
