Manuscript volume containing three works bound together, authored by sages of the Berdugo family. Meknes, early 19th century - Manuscript Notebook of the Rabbinic Berdugo Family. Meknes, 19th century. Contents of the manuscript: Folios 1a–5b: Glosses and novellae on Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat, by R. Yaakov Berdugo. Many of the entries are signed at the end: ”Yaavetz”, an acronym for his name: Yaakov Berdugo Yishmerehu Tzuro. The beginning of the composition is missing. Numerous marginal notes appear, signed: “Shlomo, ” likely referring to R. Shlomo Berdugo (see below). On folio 5b, appear the “marginalia of the Sema by the rabbi the honorable R. Petahya Berdugo ztz”l.” Folio 6a contains copied indexes to Responsa of Mahari of Trani, vol. I. Folios 8a–10b contain a lengthy responsum by R. Yaakov ibn Danan regarding usury and counterfeit coins. R. Yaakov ibn Danan was one of the early sages of Fez and died around the year 1540. Within the responsum he mentions a regulation enacted in the year Achishneh, i.e., 1609. Folios 14b–21a: Galei Amikta, commentary on Mayim Amukim by R. Yehuda Berdugo, authored by R. Yaakov son of R. Yekutiel Berdugo. First printed in Jerusalem, 1911, by R. Yaakov Chai Berdugo. Folios 22a–84b, original pagination 1–65: Pnei Meivin, novellae and explanations on Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat, by R. Maimon Berdugo. Printed in Meknes, 1941, together with Lev Meivin. On folios 96b–97a, a communal regulation concerning sewage repair, issued by the sages of Meknes in the year 1834, is copied. Marginalia: Throughout the manuscript, numerous glosses appear signed “Shlomo.” It can be proven that the commentator is R. Shlomo son of R. Daniel Berdugo, since in his note on folio 19b (on Galei Amikta), he critiques the author’s interpretation of Mayim Amukim, writing: “I do not accept this from the greatness of the rabbi, for the RAMaZ [= my teacher, my grandfather, the author of Mayim Amukim] intended to resolve several difficulties...” From here, it is evident that the writer of the glosses was a descendant of R. Yehuda Berdugo, author of Mayim Amukim. The only known sage from Meknes bearing the name Shlomo, who lived and was active during the relevant period and was a descendant of R. Yehuda Berdugo, is R. Shlomo son of R. Daniel Berdugo. On folio 31a appears a gloss signed “Shalem, ” likely written by either R. Shalem Mashash I or R. Shalem Amar, both sages of Meknes. On folio 33b, a lengthy gloss is signed: Moshe Toledano, followed by a rebuttal to his comment, signed: Y.T.N. [= Yaakov Toledano]. Both were sages of Meknes in the mid-19th century. 169 written pages in various handwritings. Size: 23 cm. Some blank pages included. Many folios contain the beginnings of responsa or halakhic rulings that were not completed. Good condition. Age stains. Some paper repairs. Original cardboard binding.
