(from the title page text) Sefer Tzemach Tzaddik, which is an order of tikkun for Thursday night arranged according to Sefer Chemdat Yamim, containing viduy, study of passages from the Zohar, and various prayers, divided according to the four weeks of each month. Izmir, printed by Yonah Ashkenazi and the great Gaon Rabbi David Chazan, [1734]. First and especially rare edition. The tikkun is arranged according to Sefer Chemdat Yamim, which was printed only three years earlier (Izmir, 1731–1732). The book was brought to print by the great Gaon Rabbi David Chazan, author of Chozeh David, one of the great rabbis of Izmir and afterwards in Jerusalem. This is the first book in the world containing tikkunim for Thursday night. The study in this book is accepted as a segulah for safeguarding the covenant for the newborn, as the author of Chemdat Yamim writes in the name of his teacher: ”And I heard from his mouth that if they will do this order in the house of the woman who gave birth, all eight days or at least four days before the circumcision, the child will be faithful in his covenant, and he will not defile the Sanctuary of Hashem all his days…” (Chemdat Yamim Part I, fol. 8d, Livorno 1763 edition). The Rashash and his fellowship write in the famous covenant document from the year 1754, that they accept upon themselves that when a son is born to one of the members, to go study the order of study in the house of the newborn. The Gaon Rabbi Chaim Palaggi brings this segulah in his Tochachat Chaim, and he writes with great enthusiasm: ”And from the day I reached understanding, all my days it was a longing desire to perform this order in the house of the woman who gave birth, but it did not materialize, until recently… a fellowship was established… and they studied the order of study in the passages of the Zohar concerning the rectification of the covenant, as written in Sefer Tzemach Tzaddik… Fortunate is the eye that saw all this, for it is a great matter for the newborn child and also for the safeguarding of the city and to bring closer the redemption speedily.” Signature on leaf [1]: ”This book is mine, the young Yaakov Burela may he live.” Additional signatures of his on the last page. On the back of the title page a note on the birth of a child in the year 1742 (?). Note in Ashkenazic handwriting. On the title page dedication: ”Consecrated to the Yeshiva Bnei Eliezer Y.B. [Yikon B’tzedek].” Among the leaves of the book appear about 15 glosses in handwriting by various writers. [1], cxxi [should be: cxxv], [2] leaves, without the twelve final leaves containing Tikkun Chemdat Yamim. 19.5 cm. Overall moderate condition. Signs of use. Stains (including noticeable stains in the first leaves), small tears and wear. Signs of worming in several leaves. Repairs at the margins of the title page.
