Shulchan Aruch with Chukei Chaim by the son-in-law of the Magen Avraham, including the siddur! – Berlin, 1700 – first and rare edition. - Pocket-format Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim and Yoreh De’ah, with the commentaries Chukei Chaim on Orach Chaim and Chukei Da’at on Yoreh De’ah, by the outstanding Gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Kaufmann HaKohen, son-in-law of the Magen Avraham. Berlin, 1700. First edition. Exceptionally, this edition was printed at the beginning with a prayer book! The siddur is exceedingly rare and is missing from many copies. The Bibliographic Project notes that it was apparently included only in some of the printed sets. Before us is a complete copy, an extremely rare survival! Contents of the siddur: Contains 20 leaves in small, unvocalized type. Preceded by a partial title page, with prayers for weekdays, Shabbat, and the three festivals. On the partial title page of the siddur is printed Psalm “Lamnatzeach” in the form of a menorah. Nature of the commentaries Chukei Chaim and Chukei Da’at: A unique composition which arranged the halachic rulings of the Shulchan Aruch according to alphabetical order of topics, rather than the usual order of simanim. Alongside the words of the Shulchan Aruch, the author provided explanations and sources, often citing the rulings of his father-in-law, the Magen Avraham, as well as material on the kabbalistic path. The author also composed a large concordance to match his arrangement to the standard simanim of the Shulchan Aruch. In addition to the siddur, many additional prayers appear within the book, some kabbalistic. Some of the prayers were composed by the author himself. Included are a prayer for livelihood according to kabbalah (in Hilchot Rosh Hashanah), a prayer composed by the Taz, a prayer from the kabbalist Rabbi Naftali Katz, and more. At the end of the volume are further prayers and segulot. Collation: A complete copy, approx. 325 leaves, pocket format (14 cm only!). Includes the siddur, followed by Orach Chaim and Yoreh De’ah. Separate title pages for the siddur, Orach Chaim, and Yoreh De’ah. Introduction, siddur, and approbations: [2], 8, [1], 11–20, [18] leaves. Orach Chaim: 2–159, [2], 160–190, [1] leaves. Yoreh De’ah: 35, [1], 35–72, [3], 79–85, 83–94 leaves. Notably, the [1] final leaf at the end of Orach Chaim is a reprint of one of the introduction leaves, with changes. The nature of the change has not been fully examined. Condition: Moderate–good. Slight textual loss at the margins of two leaves, small textual damage to a few additional leaves. Wear and repairs at the title page and several other leaves. Stains. Various manuscript notes. Simple binding.
