Zion – A Hebrew Literary Journal. Frankfurt, 1841–1842. Two volumes - A rare and important Hebrew periodical — one of the earliest attempts to establish a modern Hebrew forum for literature, scholarship, and faith at the height of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) in Germany. Its full title: Zion – A New Treasury for the Sages of Israel, in which will be collected poems, stories, and valuable inquiries in matters of faith and history, edited by Dr. Isaac Marcus Jost and Dr. Michael Creizenach. The journal was published in Frankfurt for only about two years (1841–1842). It served as one of the first platforms for the modern Hebrew intellectual discourse, blending historical and theological research with literary creation in the newly revived Hebrew language. Some of the articles and title pages were also printed in German, addressing a broader readership. On the final page of the second part, Dr. Jost notes that his friend and co-editor, Dr. Creizenach, had passed away, leaving him “to bear the heavy burden alone, ” and indeed, no further issues were published. This periodical is regarded as a landmark in the development of modern Hebrew literature and as an early expression of the transition from traditional sacred Hebrew to a cultivated, intellectual Hebrew — a vivid reflection of the spirit of the early Haskalah movement.
