A classic and exceptionally influential polemical treatise against Christianity, written in the 17th century by Rabbi Yitzhak ben Avraham of Troki (Trakai, Lithuania), a distinguished Karaite scholar and philosopher. Despite its Karaite authorship, Chizzuk Emunah (“Strengthening of Faith”) became widely accepted throughout the Jewish world for its powerful and systematic defense of Judaism and its incisive critique of Christian theology. The book systematically refutes Christian arguments directed against Judaism, addressing point by point the attempts to prove Christian doctrine from the Hebrew Bible and to justify the messianic claims of “that man.” The author’s method is intellectual, measured, and precise — employing not only the Hebrew Scriptures but also Christian sources, exposing contradictions and logical flaws within the foundations of Christian belief. Chizzuk Emunah was quickly recognized as the most thorough and eloquent anti-Christian polemic ever written in Hebrew in the early modern period. Its strength lies in the combination of rational argumentation, deep familiarity with Scripture, and philosophical clarity. It was read and studied not only among Karaites but also by rabbinic Jews, and even translated into Yiddish to make it accessible to a wider Jewish readership. The work was first published in 1681 by the German theologian Johann Christoph Wagenseil, who printed it as part of his anthology Tela Ignea Satanae, intending to expose Jewish polemics to Christian scholars. Ironically, his publication secured the work’s survival and dissemination. The present edition, printed in Amsterdam in 1705, is among the earliest and most significant independent printings. It was issued without the printer’s name, for obvious reasons — due to the sensitivity of anti-Christian content and the censorship policies of the time. Another shorter Amsterdam edition of the same year (with 120 leaves) is also known. Written in lucid and elegant Hebrew, the book combines polemic, logic, and theological reflection in defense of the eternal validity of the Torah and the unity of God. 124 leaves. Height: 12.5 cm.
