Machzor for Yom Kippur. Amsterdam, 1771. Original magnificent full-leather binding. - Order of Service for Yom Kippur according to the Rite of the Spanish-Portuguese Congregation, prepared for print by Rabbi Yaakov da Silva Mendez. Amsterdam, printed by Jansson-Mundwij, 1771 (5531). A distinguished and finely produced edition of the prayers for Yom Kippur, following the custom of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam—one of the most influential and affluent Jewish centers in Europe during the 18th century. The printing is of particularly high typographical quality, in the finest tradition of the Amsterdam Sephardic press. At the beginning of the volume appears the endorsement of Rabbi Shlomo Salem, rabbi of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam, praising the publication and commending the printers for issuing a corrected and elegant version for the use of the congregation. On the final leaf appears the autograph signature of the cantor Rabbi Yaakov da Silva Mendez, the publisher of the book and one of the prominent leaders and cantors of the Portuguese community in Amsterdam at the time. His handwritten signature adds significant historical and bibliographic value to the copy. [2], 128, 127–171 leaves. Size: 18 cm. Very good condition. Gilt edges.
