Sod Hashem and Brit Hashem – a unique and exceptionally impressive copy, with original leather binding and matching case - Two rare works printed together: Sod Hashem – on the subject of the mitzvah of circumcision, by the renowned kabbalist Rabbi David of Lida, with various additions; and Brit Hashem, containing halachic rulings, practical instructions, and various remedies and tested segulot related to circumcision and natural healing, written in Ashkenazic (Yiddish) language. Amsterdam, 1745 [5505]. Beyond its halachic and mystical value, this book was also designed as a practical working tool for mohalim (ritual circumcisers). This particular copy was presented as a gift to a mohel, and at its end were added 54 blank leaves intended for recording the names of the infants circumcised, their birth and circumcision dates, and at times the names of parents and witnesses. In some copies, hundreds of names were recorded over generations – a living testament to the activity of mohalim in Jewish communities across Europe. The work Sod Hashem, by Rabbi David of Lida (Maharad of Lida), one of the sages of Jerusalem in the 18th century, explores the inner and mystical dimensions of the mitzvah of circumcision according to Kabbalah. The book was received with great admiration by contemporary scholars and reprinted in several editions. The second work, Brit Hashem, includes a collection of halachic, medical, and mystical guidance, interwoven with formulas of segulot and prayers connected to the moment of the brit milah – a typical feature of early modern kabbalistic-folk literature. Amsterdam printing of the 18th century was known for its artistic quality and fine paper, and this copy exemplifies that tradition – clear type, high-quality paper, and meticulous printing.
